Employment opportunities

employment

Not everyone can wear the badge and uniform of a Vergennes Police officer.
Becoming a Vergennes Police Department officer is not easy. An applicant must satisfactorily complete a long list of requirements in order to just be considered for employment. Once an officer is offered an employment opportunity, their journey has not ended. They must still satisfactorily complete basic law enforcement training through the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council, as well as follow-on training required to maintain certification. A new officer must satisfactorily pass a Field Training Officer training program which is a minimum of eighty hours of training, followed by a one-year probationary period. Future specialized training opportunities may present themselves depending on each officer’s displayed aptitude and interests.

As an officer becomes more proficient in his/her duties, they will be assigned a higher level of responsibility and acquire special skills determined by the needs of our department and our community. This systematic approach is somewhat unique but critically necessary for a police department of our size. Other departments of similar size commonly rely on other larger agencies in the state to provide special investigatory skills and assistance. We do not adhere to this concept as we prefer to be self- sufficient in our ability to address the more complex calls for service.

Providing special skill set and individual training to each officer has been extremely effective in reducing and preventing crime in and around Vergennes, helps with retention of highly trained and experienced officers and has greatly improved this departments operational capability. Again, due to our geographic location on the norther border of Addison County, we are frequently called to provide law enforcement assistance to neighboring communities which do not maintain organic police services specifically assigned to their municipalities. Being part of the Vergennes Police Department provides a unique, challenging, and rewarding environment for officers who are charged with protecting the safety of the City of Vergennes.

Vergennes Police Department officers are required to maintain the highest level of integrity and to treat everyone with the highest level of respect and courtesy. Each officer’s appearance is a direct reflection of our department’s professionalism. From the headgear they wear, to their uniforms and boots, equipment and cruisers, our officers carry themselves as professional police officers. We are not just a call-taking department. We treat every call with the same level of importance and we do our best to bring each call to satisfactory and safe conclusion. We treat people with the same respect and courtesy we would want our family members treated if they needed assistance.
